Adding and modifying video configurations
Use the Video Configuration Manager to
add new video adapters and monitors to the system
and to modify the existing video configuration.
You can start the Video Configuration Manager in any of these ways:
-
Open the Desktop's System Administration window
(double-click on the System Administration icon) and
double-click on the Video Configuration Manager.
-
Start the SCOadmin launcher by entering scoadmin
on the command line, then select the
Video Configuration Manager.
-
Enter scoadmin video on the command line.
NOTE:
While any user can view the system's video configuration,
only root
can modify video configuration.
If this task is performed in multiuser mode, users currently
logged in and running the X server
will not see any changes until their next session.
To add or modify your video configuration:
-
Start the Video Configuration Manager in
one of the ways described above.
-
The X.org xorgcfg tool is launched within
the Video Configuration Manager. This
tool probes your video hardware and creates an
initial X11 server configuration file, /etc/xorg.conf.
Select OK to continue.
-
If you are adding a new video adapter, or if the
configuration that was set at installation-time
isn't working well, select Configure card
from the xorgcfg Main menu.
Follow the prompts to configure settings for your
video adapter. You can choose from a
database of video adapter definitions, which
includes information about the card's chipset and
the video driver to use. See
``Supported video adapters''
for the video drivers that are provided in SCO OpenServer Release 6.0.0.
When you are finished,
select OK to return to the Main menu.
-
Select Configure monitor to refine the
settings for your monitor. Follow the on-screen prompts
to define the supported frequencies for your monitor.
You are asked to provide both the horizontal sync range
and the vertical sync range.
NOTE:
Do not change these
monitor values without first consulting your monitor's
documentation for supported settings. Incorrect
values can cause problems ranging from out-of-sync errors to
severe monitor damage.
When you are finished, select OK to return to
the Main menu.
-
Select Configure screen to refine the resolution
at which your configuration will run. Follow the prompts
to set the appropriate color depth and video mode (or resolution)
to run at for the given color depth.
Only VESA standard modes, as determined by your
video hardware, are supported.
When you are finished, select OK to return to
the Main menu.
-
Select Write xorg.conf and quit. Your new
configuration settings are written to the
/etc/xorg.conf file and the
Video Configuration Manager exits.
-
Run the following commands to restart the X server and
activate your new video configuration:
scologin stop
scologin start
NOTE:
If you experience problems with your X configuration
after running the Video Configuration Manager,
you may need to make manual modifications to the
configuration.
See
``Configuring video adapters manually''
for information of performing a manual configuration.
If, after performing Steps 1 and 2 in that procedure, you
still experience problems, you will need to make
your own modifications to the /etc/xorg.conf file.
See the
xorg.conf(4)
manual page for details.
