Testing whether you can dial out
Having established that you can send commands to the modem,
follow these steps to test whether you can dial out to a
another site:
-
Enable the modem's speaker so you can hear it dial out and connect:

 ATM2
(Use ATM0 to turn it off.)

-
Enter the following modem command:

 ATDTphone_number
(This assumes that the connection can use tone dialing.
Use the ATDP command for pulse dialing.)

-
Having confirmed that the modem can dial out, exit cu
by entering:

 ~.

-
Dial into the other system using the appropriate modem control port,
for example:

 cu -x9 -ltty1A phone_number
The -x9 option generates useful debugging information.

 NOTE:
Use dashes in the telephone number to indicate a pause while dialing.
Do not use the comma (,) from the AT command set.

-
If the connection is successful and logging in is allowed on the remote
machine, you should see a login prompt.
If you have any problems, see
``Problems dialing out''.
